Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a skin disorder that occurs commonly in infancy and may persist into adult life.

This skin disorder is manifested by an extreme itch that drives the patient to tear the skin by scratching which ultimately leads of thickening and scarring. There appears to be two forms of this problem. One is allergic in nature and may be associated with other allergic manifestations including allergic rhinitis(hay fever), asthma, and urticaria (hives). The second most common form does not appear to have an allergic cause and is termed "intrinsic". The allergic form is commonly associated with dust mite allergy, however, other allergens may also play a role in cause, particularly, foods. This disease is a major management problem that often requires a combined approach by the allergist and dermatologist.
